Mezonin ( Italian: mezzanino , French. Mezzanine "mezzanine" from mezzano - "middle"; close to French maison - "house" [1] ), superstructure , tower , half-storey , half -house - superstructure above the middle part of a residential building, often has a balcony . It often takes the form of a cross or square, sometimes a hexagon. It may have the shape of a cylinder, less often an octahedron. Often this add-on is not functional, but simply a decorative element.
In Russia, the mezzanine was widespread in the 19th century . It has become a hallmark of stone and wooden estates.
This term also means a low balcony in the theater or the first row of seats on the balcony.
This architectural element is placed in the name of the textbook Chekhov's story “A House with a Mezzanine ”.
Currently, this term refers to a multi-tier storage area.
