Siege
The siege of the Bendery fortress , which was a powerful stronghold of the Ottoman Empire , began on July 15, 1770 and lasted two months. The Bender garrison, numbering over 12 thousand people, including selected Janissaries , was opposed by the 33 thousandth Russian army, which at first hoped to force the city to surrender by starvation and cannon fire. An important role in the management of siege work was played by Rodion Nikolaevich Gerbel .
On the eve of the assault planned for September 15, the shelling intensified, a fire broke out in the city from cannon fire. On the night of September 16, Panin gave the order for the assault, which was preceded by a demolition of the wall. A fierce battle in the city engulfed in flames lasted all night; in the morning, the surviving defenders of the fortress laid down their arms. During the assault, about 7 thousand Turks were killed, the rest were captured. Russian losses during the capture of the fortress amounted to 6 thousand people, of which 1672 were killed. Thus, the seizure of this powerful fortress became the bloodiest battle for the Russian side in the entire war.
