Biography

His father specialized in the production of precision and optical devices. Under the guidance of his father, he began to study optics . At the age of 28, he inherited a family business.

In 1896, he opened the first film factory in Germany and began serial production of his improved film projection machines , film cameras and other equipment. In the same year, he created a film studio using artificial lighting and began to shoot (as a screenwriter, director, cameraman and producer) the first silent short , documentary and feature films . He opened a movie theater on Unter den Linden in Berlin .

In 1897 he founded the company "Mester-Proektografengengeselshtaft" (" Mester-film "). Filmed members of the German imperial family, nature scenes and aerial views of Berlin, made from a balloon.

In 1903, he showed the first sound films on a film projector and phonograph, a device producing synchronously recorded recordings, which he called Biophon .

In 1912, together with the German astronomer F. Archengold, he shot the world's first film about the solar eclipse .

Since 1914, he published chronically documentary magazines Mester-Wohenschau, while continuing to produce feature films.

In 1916, together with Austrian filmmaker Alexander Joseph Kolovrat-Krakow, he founded the Sascha-Messter studio, which shot military reports from the battlefields of the First World War and provided imperial military propaganda.

Since 1917, he dealt mainly with cinema technology. In 1920, he founded the German Film Technology Society.

Since 1928, he was an expert in film technology at Tobis. One of the founders of the German Optical Association.

With the participation of Mester, his film companies shot about 200 films, he was the producer of more than 430 films.

Awards and honors

  • He was awarded the Iron Cross of the 2nd degree (1915).
  • In 1926, the Association of German Filmmakers (now the Society for TV and Film Technology / Fernseh- und Kinotechnische Gesellschaft ) established an Oscar Mester medal to be awarded for outstanding services in promoting novelties in film technology. Mester himself in 1927 became her first laureate.
  • In 1936 he became an honorary professor at the Berlin Technical University .
  • In 1941 he was awarded the Goethe Medal in the field of art and science.
