Mongredien, Augustus

Augustus [1] Mongredien ( born Augustus Mongredien , March 17, 1807 , London - March 30, 1888 , ibid.) - English chess player , master. Member of a major international tournament in London (1862). For many years he was the leader of English amateur chess players.

Biography

Born in the family of a French officer who moved to England in 1798.

He studied at the Roman Catholic College in Penn ( Buckinghamshire ). He was fluent in several languages, including Greek and Arabic. Sooner started to do business. He was the owner of the first screw steamer, flying to the Middle East . In 1859 he joined the company "H.J. Johnston and Co." In 1862 he acquired the estate of Hitherside [2] in Surrey . In 1864, he founded his own corn trading company.

Gradually retired and began to engage in literary work. In 1872 he was elected a member of the Cobden Club [3] . He was also known as a musician, botanist and political economist.

He was president of the London and Liverpool chess clubs. He did a lot for the development of chess in both cities.

As a sign of special merit, by special order, W. Gladstone received a pension from the civil list .

In recent years, he lived in the London area of ​​Forest Hill.
