Biography
Born in the Dutch city of Welsen ( Dutch. Velsen ). He studied sociology in Amsterdam , taught at the University of Groningen and at the University of Erasmus in Rotterdam . At the turn of the 1990-2000s. gradually turned to practical politics and in 2001 headed the list of candidates for parliament of the newly created party “Fit for the Netherlands” (Leefbaar Nederland). Elections were to be held in May 2002. However, on February 9, 2002 Fortoyne published an interview in a newspaper in which he unequivocally declared his determination to stop the immigration of Muslims to the Netherlands . The next day he was removed from the electoral list, and a day later founded a new party, his own - Pim Fortoyne List . In March 2002, Fortoyne triumphantly won the Rotterdam City Council election: his party list received 36% of the vote, and this put an end to the nearly 60-year period during which the city was ruled by Social Democrats from the Labor Party ( Dutch. Partij van de Arbeid ) .
A week before the nationwide election, Fortoyne was shot dead by Volkert van der Graaf, an activist of a radical environmental group. Van der Graaf said shortly after his arrest that he had avenged Fortoyne for his words about the permissibility of wearing fur coats; however, in court, he already declared himself the defender of the Dutch Muslims [4] . In 2003, Van der Graaf was sentenced to 18 years in prison. He was released in 2014, having served two-thirds of his term [5] .
The assassination of Fortoyne was the first political assassination in the Netherlands for more than 100 years [6] .
Political Opinions
Fortune’s political position was based on his harsh anti-Islamic views. Back in 1997 , he published the book “Against the Islamization of Our Culture”. Islam , according to Fortoyne, is a backward religious doctrine that threatens modern European civilization. One of the most important forms of this threat, according to Fortoyne, is uncontrolled immigration from Muslim countries to Europe in general and to the Netherlands in particular. Speaking on the issue of immigration, Fortoyne emphasized that most immigrants do not flee from political persecution, but from economic distress, striving for a certain level of comfort. At the same time, new immigrants do not consider the social, cultural and moral standards of their new homeland to be binding, thanks to which this level of comfort has been largely achieved. Fortoyne stated that immigrants have the right to a new homeland only if they are ready to accept its basic values and join its social structure. For the Netherlands, among such values are, in particular, the equal rights of women and homosexuals, which, as he rightly believed, traditional Islam strongly does not recognize.
This part of Fortoyne’s views is traditionally associated with right-wing political forces, but Fortoyn has repeatedly stated that he has nothing to do with the far-right (such as French politician Jean Marie Le Pen or Austrian Jörg Hyder ). Being openly gay , he advocated a number of liberal initiatives, whether gay marriage or the right to euthanasia . Fortoyne’s campaign program focused on developing new technologies, especially in healthcare.
Fortoyn's Legacy
In 2004 , during a television vote in the framework of the project “ The Greatest Dutchman ”( KRO Broadcasting Company) Fortoyn was elected the greatest Dutchman of all time , ahead of the founder of the independent Netherlands, William I of Orange , as well as Rembrandt and Van Gogh ; it is true that later the votes were recounted (taking into account the simultaneous voting on the Internet), and it turned out that Wilhelm of Orange was still somewhat ahead of Fortoyne, however, the official voting results were never canceled.
The party founded by Fortoyn after his death quickly lost influence. However, all the major political forces of the Netherlands significantly adjusted their positions, taking into account the broad support that Fortein's views received in Dutch society.
