Critic reviews
The film received mostly negative reviews and its current rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 0%. [2]
Ken Rudolph noted that the actors were great, but the film looked banal and fanciful. [3]
Film critic Torsten Kruger believes that Camargo "has nothing to say and nothing to say." [4] The film "was conceived as something deep, but it offers too little to be interesting."
The cast, so overwhelmed with talent, that Jean Reno and Cherry Jones barely show themselves, overflowing with too theatrical dialogues. Juliet Ryllance, who plays the role of Nina, is particularly difficult. [five]
On the contrary, the World Cinema Now Program review says: “Chekhov’s“ The Seagull ”has been posed many times over the decades, but the actor and director Christian Camargo (The Lord of the Storm ) managed to convey the darkness and depth of the Russian tragedy by shifting the action to Memorial Day in rural New England and gave a new, modern taste to this material. Dark music, excellent cinematography and excellent work of a wonderful acting ensemble in the amount of present us the story of how the family, gathered together, breaks up during only one catastrophic weekend. " [6]
The New York Times notes that “the original intention of the Chekhov's“ The Seagull ”, the subject of which is the emptiness and meaninglessness of the“ end of the century ”, was emasculated and impersonal. Supporting characters are given so little space that the film is sometimes practically meaningless. The bird - the symbol of the play - instead of a gull, turned into an Eagle. What remains is a cracked egg shell. ” [7]
