Aral thin-tail [2] [3] [4] ( lat. Ischnura aralensis ) is a species of dragonflies of the Coenagrionidae family [5] . A rare, locally distributed species of dragonflies. The representative of the only genus in the CIS whose species are characterized by bright polymorphism is the presence of sharply different color forms [3] . Known for two local habitats: in the basin of the lower reaches of the Syr Darya River and in the Southern Urals [6] .

DescriptionA shallow, very gentle addition of a dragonfly. The color is blue-green with a metallic-shiny dark pattern that is variable in shape. The ninth tergite of the abdomen is black. The posterior margin of the pronotum is obtuse-triangular in shape, uniformly rounded, without a pronounced protrusion in the middle. Mesostigmal plate on the sides with two raised semicircular leaf-shaped lobes. The upper anal appendages are two-lobed, the lower lobe ends with a long claw-shaped protrusion [7] . It differs from other species of the genus in the round, pronot-free pronotum shape, and the males also have high vertical lobes on the mesostigmal plate of the chest [2] .
RangeA rare species of dragonflies distributed locally. In Kazakhstan, the species is known from single finds from the Syr Darya basin and the Ilmen group of lakes in the Southern Urals [8] [9] .
On the territory of Russia, it was first discovered in the Chelyabinsk region by the discoverer of the species in August 1985 on the territory of the Ilmensky Reserve [10] [6] , then it was found on Lake Alakul and Big Akul [6] . Based on these findings, indications of the species living in the Southern Urals are based [11] [12] [13] . It was also found in the Uchalinsky district of the Republic of Bashkortostan [6] .
During July 2009, mass years of the Aral thin-tail were observed on some lakes of the Chelyabinsk region [14] .
In Central Asia, it lives on the tugai floodplain lakes that exist during the floods of the Syr Darya River. In the Southern Urals, it occurs along the shores of lakes, where there is no intensive human economic activity.
SecurityThe species is included in the Red Book of Kazakhstan in the status of "rare species". Due to the regulation of river flow and water intake for irrigation, the number of floodplain lakes is greatly reduced. With the disappearance of habitats, this species is threatened with extinction [3] [15] .
It is included in the Red Book of the Chelyabinsk region (I category. Extremely rare, poorly studied, probably endangered species.). It is protected in the Ilmensky reserve [6] .
