History

Born in Coburg , the capital of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha , German Empire . The eldest son of Infante Alfonso de Orleans and de Bourbon, Duke of Gallier (1886–1975), and Princess Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1884–1966). The grandson on the paternal line is Infante Antonio, the Duke of Gallier (1866–1930) and the Infanta Eulalia of Spain (1864–1958), and on the maternal line, Alfred, the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1844–1900) and the Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna Romanova (1853 —1920) [1] .

On July 14, 1937, the 27-year-old Alvaro inherited from his father the title of the 6th Duke of Gallier in the Kingdom of Italy [2] .

In 1946, after the proclamation of the Republic of Italy, Alvaro de Orleans and Sexsen-Coburg-Gotha lost the ducal title and became the titular duke of Galliere.

On August 22, 1997, 87-year-old Alvaro de Orleans and Sexsen-Coburg-Gotha died in Monte Carlo , outliving his two younger brothers and becoming the last of the living children of infante Alfonso and Princess Beatrice, as well as the last living grandson of Prince Alfred Saxe-Coburg. Gotha and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna.

Since his eldest son Alonso (1941-1975) died in 1975 at the age of 35, his grandson Alfonso (born 1968), inherited after his death the title of the 7th Duke of Galliera.

Marriage and Family

On July 10, 1937, in Rome, Prince Alvaro married Carl Parodi-Delfino (December 13, 1909, Milan — July 27, 2000, Sanlucar de Barrameda ), daughter of Leopoldo Girolamo Parodi-Delfino, Italian senator , and Lucy Henney [3] .

They had four children:

  • Donja Gerard de Orleans-Bourbon and Parodi-Delfino (born August 25, 1939, Rome ), on July 26, 1963, married Harry Freeman Saint (born February 13, 1941 , New York). In her first marriage she had two children and divorced in 1977 . In 1990, she again married Ignacio Romero and Solis, the 6th Marquis de Marcelina, from a marriage with whom she had no children.
