Furio Colombo ( Italian: Furio Colombo ; born January 1, 1931 ) is an Italian journalist, writer, essayist , politician, political observer and lecturer at the School of Journalism at Columbia University .
Outside the US and Italy, Furio Colombo is known as the editor-in-chief of L'Unita, the largest Italian left-wing newspaper. It was published in such world-famous media as “il Mondo”, “La Stampa”, “Commentary”, “Repubblica”, “Espresso” and “The New York Review of Books”. He was elected to the Italian parliament as a deputy from the Left Democrats . As a historian of photography, he argued that the photo essay as an independent genre was widely used since the Spanish War. In the work of Umberto Eco, “The Middle Ages Began, ” is mentioned and cited as the author of the essay “Power, Groups, and Conflict in Neo-Feudal Society”. Columbia University professor Furio Colombo and writer Umberto Eco saw in the revival of castes and the medieval clan spirit a mandatory urban attribute of the new Middle Ages. On his initiative, an international prize for military correspondents named after Antonio Russo , who was killed in Georgia in late 2000, was established in 2001 . The author of the concept of “Vietnamization” of territories, possibly related to the all-Russian consequences of the protracted conflict of Russian federal forces in Chechnya .
