The Poltava monument to Ivan Mazepa became the first full-fledged monument to the full growth of the hetman, not only in Ukraine but also in the world - before that, all the monuments to Mazepa were installed in the form of busts [2] [3] .
Content
History
They tried to realize the idea of erecting a monument to Mazepa in Poltava from the mid-2000s. The initiator was the chairman of the Poltava regional association of the All-Ukrainian society "Enlightenment " Nikolai Kulchinsky, who collected funds from all over Ukraine and the diaspora [2] .
To promote the establishment of monuments, Mazepa considered the former president of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko to be his duty. On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava, he issued a decree by which Ukraine should adequately honor the Ukrainian-Swedish union [2] .
The monument was made in 2009 and was going to be erected on the Pokrov holiday on October 14 of that year, but big politics prevented the opening. Deputies of the Poltava city council agreed to place the monument on Cathedral Square, but subsequently the city authorities announced a moratorium on construction work in this territory, so the monument was ready [2] . The next mayor, Alexander Mamay, also opposed the unveiling of the monument, saying that the decision to erect a monument to Mazepa is a political issue and should be taken by the leadership of the state, not the city [2] .
After the events of Euromaidan, Poltava again returned to the question of perpetuating the hetman and returning the monument to Poltava. For six years of storage in the backyard of the Kiev factory “Artist”, bronze casting was oxidized, so it was restored before returning to Poltava [2] .
Monument Opening
On October 14, 2015, in Poltava, near the Holy Assumption Cathedral , a solemn presentation of the public of the hetman transported from Kiev in bronze to coincide with the Day of Defender of Ukraine and the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks took place. Archbishop of Poltava and Kremenchug Fedor served a prayer service in honor of Mazepa. The ceremony was also attended by a descendant of the hetman - Igor Mazepa [2] [4] . The official opening of the monument was planned at this place in November 2015 after the construction of the pedestal [2] , but the decision-permit for installation from the City Council was made on February 25, 2016 [5] .
At different times, in addition to ordinary citizens, the monument was donated by former president Viktor Yushchenko and his brother Petro Yushchenko, MP Viktor Baloga and singer Oleg Skripka , head of the Poltava Regional State Administration Golovko. It was decided to erect a monument to Ivan Mazepa on Cathedral Square near the Holy Assumption Cathedral , which, incidentally, was once erected at the expense of the hetman [2] .
It was officially opened on May 7, 2016. At the celebrations, in which about 2500 people took part, the President of Ukraine and the Patriarch of the UOC-KP Filaret spoke [2] [1] .
In particular, the President of Ukraine delivered the following speech at the opening ceremony [1] :

The authors of the monument are sculptor Nikolai Bilyk and architect Viktor Shevchenko. This monument is the first full-fledged monument to the hetman, while busts of Ivan Mazepa have already been installed in several Ukrainian cities, as well as in the USA, Romania and Austria. The weight of the bronze sculpture of Mazepa is 2.5 tons, the “height” is 3.20 m [4] [3] .
