History

The rock festival was held with a large gathering of youth on May 9, 1969 at the recreation center of the RostovSelkhozStroy design institute, located on Levberdon [1] [2] . The festival was organized by the efforts of the musicians of the Rostov group "Morning Dew" [1] . Since the father of the bassist of “Morning Dew” was the secretary of the party committee at the RostovSelkhozStroy Institute, a festival was held at the institute recreation center without unnecessary formalities [2] .

The Rostov groups “Morning Dew”, “Losers” (V. Grazhdankin, S. Lyuty, M. Zavalishin) [3] , “Baby and Brothers” (A. Putilin, Belousov brothers) [3] , “Korda” took part in the festival (I. Skryagin, L. Lipyansky) [3] [4] .

The festival’s poster, it’s a full-wall backdrop, was made in the courtyard of the Rostov House of Actor by friends of musicians, aspiring artists [4] .

On May 8, equipment was delivered to the base; concerts of the groups took place on May 9, on Friday. And on Saturday, equipment and tools have already been taken out. The festival was attended by about two thousand people [5] .

The name Woodstock-on-Don appeared much later, thanks to reporters. Among musicians and spectators, this festival in 1969 was called the "pop session" [2] .

Quotes

  • “On May 9, Friday, all Rostov high school students already knew that the coolest bit festival was taking place at Levberdon. And on Saturday, in the morning, half of the city stretched across the bridge to this recreation center. And I, including, with friends from my 49th school. There were many more people from 5, 47, 51 schools, from our party in the Energetik public garden. The crowd gathered, as before the May Day demonstration, when along all the lanes the people flock to their columns. Only here is some strange crowd, hairy and pretended ... The cops were surprised, but they did not blame anyone. On Saturday, on the third day, there were no concerts anymore, only separate groups with guitars ... They said later that in a couple of days they even reported about this fest by Voice of America ! Of course, complete silence reigned in our press ” [6] - Alexander Kislyakov , 2019 .

Memory

  • On May 8, 2019, in the concert hall of the Don State Public Library , an anniversary concert was held dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the first independent open-air rock festival in the USSR “Woodstock-on-Don” [6] [7] .
