The painting was painted in 1872 when Claude Monet, at the invitation of his brother Leon, came to Rouen to take part in Rouen Municipal Exhibition. The trip was very successful, Monet wrote here a few landscapes and subsequently repeatedly came here to work on the paintings.

The leading motive of the painting is the sailing ships on the Seine , laid up with lowered sails; In the foreground, there are trees on the shore, whose branches somewhat shade and counterbalance the opposite bank of the river, which is flooded with bright sunlight.

The picture remained for a long time in the artist's studio and was first presented to the public only in February 1909 at the Drouot Hotel, then was bought by Frankfurt merchant Hugo Nathan and resold to the famous German collector Otto Krebs . During World War II, it was captured by Soviet troops and sent to the USSR on account of reparations ; For a long time it was kept in the State Hermitage Museum's vaults and was shown only in 1995 at the Hermitage exhibition of trophy art [2] ; since 2001, it has been listed in the permanent exhibition of the Hermitage and since the end of 2014 it has been exhibited in the Gallery of the memory of Sergei Schukin and the Morozov brothers in the building of the General Staff building (room 403) [3] .
