Biography
Born in the family of the commander of the royal army, Dhir Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana (younger brother of Jang Bahadur Rana ). His mother died when he was still a child and therefore he was brought up by Putali Maharani, the wife of Jang Bahadur. He graduated from Doveton College in Calcutta.
In the years 1885-1901. served as prime minister of Nepal. He came to power in a military coup when the Shamsher family, the nephews of Jang Bahadur, killed many of his sons and seized power in Nepal. He carried out important infrastructure reforms. In particular, a water supply system was created, English was taught in schools and hospitals. He transformed the land tax, a more effective administrative system was created. He also founded a high school in Durbar, Bir Hospital, Bir Tower (Ghanta Ghar), the Putshala School and the national sanitation system. He provided the necessary supply of drinking water to the cities of Kathmandu (1891) and Bhadgaon (1895). He founded the Birsk library for the collection and preservation of valuable books and manuscripts, reformed the postal system and expanded the road network to Kathmandu.
Carried out active military interaction with the authorities of British India. For this, on the diamond anniversary of Queen Victoria, he was awarded the title of Knight - the great commander of the Order of the Star of India .
