History
This mosque was founded by Mohamed Bey al-Qadir in 1792 , immediately after Oran was transferred to Algeria by Spain . It is possible that this was a reconstruction of a mosque that existed before 1509 [1] . After the death of Mohamed Bey in 1799 , his body was buried in a mosque [2] . Soon, around the mosque built outside the city walls, a quarter arose, which was completely destroyed by the French in 1832 . The mosque building was converted into a fort , which until 1893 housed the French garrison. In 1893, the mosque was reopened for believers [3] . After expanding the borders of the city in the late XIX - early XX centuries, the building of the mosque fell into the city limits and was surrounded by multi-story buildings.
