Storm of Swords
Tormund was present in Mans the Raider's tent when John Snow was brought to the last. Later, John enters Tormund's squad with Igritt. Tormund’s detachment took part in the siege of the Black Castle - he and his sons were engaged in the construction of a “turtle” covering the ram for a siege of the gates. When John Snow sets off for the feral, Tormund meets him and escorts him to the King-of-the-Wall tent. After a sudden attack by the troops of Stannis Baratheon on the wild camp, Tormund leads his squad into battle, but the wild are defeated.
Dragon Dance
Tormund survived the battle with the army of Stannis Baratheon and was able to lead a large number of wild ones. John Snow sent scouts to search for Tormund, in the hope that they would be able to establish contact. Later, Snow frees the captive “princess of the wild” Vel, taking her word from her that she will find and bring Tormund. Vel succeeds and Tormund with the wild come to the Wall.
John and Tormund make a deal - they allow the feral to go south of the Wall, but in exchange they must occupy the abandoned castles of the Watch and defend the Wall in the coming war with the Others. Tormund himself was sent to the Oak Shield castle, leaving his son as one of John's hostages in the Black Castle. John Snow appoints Tormund as the head of the Cruel House expedition to help those remaining wild behind the Wall.
