Ukrainian Community of the Republic of Croatia

The Ukrainian community of the Republic of Croatia ( Ukr. Ukrainian community of the Republic of Croatia , Croat. Ukrajinska zajednica Republike Hrvatske ) is the main cultural and educational organization of the Ukrainian diaspora in the Republic of Croatia .

The organization was officially registered on January 20, 2008 in the city of Slavonsky Brod , however its members are active participants in Ukrainian cultural and educational associations for more than 40 years, including the Union of Ruthenians and Ukrainians of Croatia . It is the first organization of the Ukrainian national minority, which unites the largest number of Ukrainians in Croatia .

Goals, Activities, and Achievements

The Ukrainian community of the Republic of Croatia arose with the aim of preserving the cultural values ​​of Ukrainians and establishing ties with their ethnic homeland - Ukraine. One of the main tasks of the Ukrainian community of Croatia is to promote friendly relations between Croatia and Ukraine and two friendly peoples. From 900 to 1100 representatives of the Ukrainian national minority from approx. 2000 Ukrainians living in this country. As part of the Ukrainian community of the Republic of Croatia, there are currently 10 cultural and educational societies and associations in a number of Croatian cities, mainly Slavonia , Zagreb and Rijeka and Istria County . Representatives of other minorities who are sympathetic to the cultural customs of Ukrainians are actively joining the organization’s work.

The Ukrainian community participates in numerous cultural festivals and events in Croatia and beyond, and has established successful international cooperation with other Ukrainian organizations around the world. Members and organizers of the Ukrainian community of Croatia have successfully cooperated with the Union of Ruthenians and Ukrainians of Croatia since its inception in 1968, and the official creation of the parent organization came from practical considerations.

Among the main tasks is the rallying and organization of representatives of the Ukrainian national minority in order to preserve, develop and promote cultural and ethnic identity. The goal is to resist assimilation and promote integration into Croatian society in the interests of both the national minority and the full development of Croatia. In their successful and continuous activities, the organizations of the Ukrainian community of Croatia have achieved significant results in the field of culture and education. Over 40 summer schools for Ruthenians and Ukrainians of Croatia were organized for elementary and secondary school students, and the opening of regular Ukrainian classes in Croatian elementary schools was initiated.

The company actively promotes amateur performances, conducts informational and publishing activities, in particular, issues the newsletter “Herald of the Ukrainian community in Croatia”. Community members support the publication of 50 books related to Ukrainian culture, as well as participate in the creation of television and radio broadcasts in the Ukrainian language, are involved in the opening of ethnographic and art collections of Ruthenians and Ukrainians in Croatia.

Among other events, members of the Ukrainian community for about 35 years successfully conducted and supported a central cultural event in the life of Ruthenians and Ukrainians in Croatia called “ ”. They also took the initiative to open the Central Library of Ruthenians and Ukrainians of Croatia, which now successfully works in the network of city libraries of Zagreb [1] . The Ukrainian community of the Republic of Croatia arranged a number of cultural and educational events throughout Croatia and actively collaborated with reputable Ukrainian organizations in the world and Europe, becoming a member of the World Congress of Ukrainians and the European Congress of Ukrainians.

Through the efforts of the Ukrainian community of the Republic of Croatia, a monument to I. Franco in Lipika in 2011 and a in 2015 were unveiled.
