Story

1938 year. During the Nazi expedition in Mexico, in the Aztec ruins were found many "vampire masks" that can turn people into vampires, as well as a petrified man, "walled" in a column. The action is transferred to New York . The laboratory is already detected by an aging Speedwagon, and it is captured. Joseph Jostar , the grandson of Jonathan, sets off to find him, and, finding the laboratory, sees in them “People from the Column” ( 柱 の 男 Hasira no otoko ) , whom the Nazis awaken with the blood of prisoners. An awakened being kills all lab workers, but is defeated by Joseph. In the meantime, three more ancient Column-Man are awakening, who intend to find the ancient “red stone Aisha” ( я イ ジ ャ の 赤石 eija no sekiseki ) in order to become perfect beings and regain dominance over humanity. Joseph will have to fight against them, as well as meet his mother, who, Joseph thought, had already died.

Manga

Creation

Battle Tendency was supposed to be part of the originally conceived trilogy [1] . Joseph Jostar, the protagonist of Battle Tendency , has a clear resemblance to Jonathan Jostar, the hero of the first part of Phantom Blood . Hirohiko Araki, the author of this manga, noted that he “killed” the hero of the first part, and this was an unprecedented event in the history of shonen manga, where the characters are always “immortal”. Such a bold step met with mixed reaction from manga readers, so Araki deliberately endowed Joseph with similar external qualities and consanguinity, so that it was easier for readers to accept a new hero and that they did not have the feeling that they began to read a completely new manga. However, the character of Joseph Araki made completely different. Jonathan, as the author admitted, turned out to be too “right” hero and therefore boring. Joseph, on the other hand, was conceived as an adventurer, able to better control the course of development of the plot: he is constantly looking for different ways to win battles, even if for this he needs to go to ignoble and even crazy actions. Joseph is able to think like a fraud, it does not matter for him to follow any rules or principles during the battle. Araki did not conceive of Joseph as a character driven by courage or perseverance, but by cunning and logic [2] . The author’s desire to endow the hero with eccentric features was also explained by the fact that Joseph did not have an excessive resemblance to Kensiro, the protagonist of the manga Fist of the North Star [3] , also in the second part of the manga there is a significant influence of works about Indiana Jones [4] . Araki admitted that he does not like the popular concept in the shonen manga, when the main character is endowed with a mysterious and powerful force or receives a powerful artifact, preferring to create a character with his weaknesses and able to make mistakes and defeat in battle, using logic [2] .

Working on the image of the main villains, the "people of the columns", Araki was inspired by Roman statues and Japanese nio statues.

Araki wanted in a better way to portray rival and at the same time companionship that did not work out so well in Phantom Blood ; for Jonathan, Dio was an enemy, Zeppeli a mentor, and Speedwagon an ally. And for this a character was introduced named Caesar Zeppeli, who is a descendant of Antonio Zeppeli from the first part. Araki admitted that he especially liked working on Caesar's visual style and combining the watercolor colors of blue, pink and white to create his costume. Araki planned to connect the ability to use the power of jamon with the genealogies of Joseph and Caesar [2] . Mangaka immediately conceived the character's death in the middle of the story of the story. Caesar's jamon is in the form of soap bubbles. According to Araki, the bubbles symbolize fleetingness and predict the fate of the character and the burden that he has to bear. Also, the fate of Caesar was indicated by his characteristic pose, resembling a crucifix [2] .

The creation of Lisa Lisa proceeded from the idea of Araka while working on Phantom Blood : "And what will a woman who owns the power of jamon look like, and what will be her role in the plot?" Mangaka noted that the more traditional image of the old man simply suited worse for the role of Joseph’s mentor, and the image of the young woman gave the plot dynamism. Araki created Lisa Lisa in the image of his former senior friend, who helped teach little materials to elementary school little Araki. Mangaka described her as a kind, incredibly smart, but stubborn woman and sometimes with sadistic inclinations. The author endowed Lisa with the same qualities. Mangaka noted that in the 1980s it was unacceptable in the manga to portray strong women, when in Japanese society the image of a woman was associated with tenderness and humility. This image is fully consistent with Erina Pendleton from the first part. This fact made mangaka nervous when working on a “female mentor”. In the end, the author noticed that it was great to challenge the expectations of the Weekly Shonen Jump representatives, showing the main character's female mentor helping her to become stronger. Also, according to the author, in a battle where supernatural power is the decisive element, physical data are not so important, which means that opponents with completely different physical characteristics can take part in the battle, a woman can compensate for her physical weakness with a more powerful energy force [2] .

Working on the main villains - “people from the column”, Araki was inspired by Roman sculptures, the sphinx and Japanese nio statues. The stone forms of the villains resemble sculptures from temples, or temples, and they are endowed with a mythical aura. Working on the main villains, Araki wanted to depict how far they surpassed the villain from the first part of Dio Brando . "If you put on a stone mask becomes a vampire and surpasses humanity, then you need to come up with something that surpasses vampires, perfect deities." For this reason, the “people from the column” are endowed with strange physical beauty, as if they were divine figures in bodily form. Mangaka wanted to convey the feeling that defeating such enemies would be impossible. At the same time, Araki wanted to combine mythical elements and scientific theory, suggesting that "people-from-columns" are the embodiment of biological evolution, which far surpassed people. Mangaka did not conceive the idea of returning their leader Kars, noting that he was “doomed to wander forever in the dark space, which is the perfect punishment for a higher being.” Kars will not be able to return to Earth unless Araki decides to create a plot where people are able to travel in space. In this case, the new plot with the character will be finally final for him [2] .

Edition

The first volume of the manga was released in 1987. In total, the manga is collected in 7 tank booms, which were produced from 1988 to 1989 [5] [6] . In 2012, the first chapters of the manga were released in color and digital form for reading on smartphones and tablets.

The manga itself, along with Phantom Blood, was reprinted and released from December 1, 2013 to January 4, 2014 in the form of hardcover volumes. Hirohiko Araki painted cover art for his new artistic style. [7] New editions of the manga were also licensed by Viz Media for release in the United States. [8]

Anime Series

Based on the manga, an anime series was released, which began to be broadcast on Tokyo Metropolitan Television on October 5, 2012 [14] . The last episode was released on April 6, 2013. The anime itself covers the plot of Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency , the second part of the manga is devoted to the last 17 episodes. Initially, the studio planned to create 24 episodes, but this was not enough to fit the plot of the second part of the Battle Tendency manga, so 2 more episodes were added [15] . Since German Nazis play a significant role in the second part of the manga, the anime adaptation was heavily censored: Nazi symbols, phrases, and dialogs were shortened. Nazi greetings were hidden by a blackout on the screen [16] .

The opening theme for the second part of the first season, the adaptation of the Battle Tendency manga - BLOODY STREAM, was released on January 30, the text was written by Saori Sodama, and the music was created by Tosiyuki Omori. [17] In the first week after release, more than 21,000 copies of the single were sold, raising it to 4th place in Oricon's weekly top charts. [18] [19] [20] , as well as 7th place on the Billboard singles chart of Japan according to Billboard [21] . The closing theme is the famous 1971 Roundabout single.

On March 29, 2013, the Warner Bros label released the album Battle Tendency [Musik] ( ジ ョ ジ ョ の 奇妙, 冒 険 ) , which included soundtracks from the second part of the first season of the anime series. The album was released along with the Blu-ray edition of the anime series and includes 22 soundtracks. [22] A second album titled Battle Tendency (Leicht Verwendbar) ( ジ ョ ジ ョ の 奇妙 な 冒 険 ) was released on April 26, 2013 along with the limited fourth edition of the Blu-ray anime series disc and includes 26 soundtracks. [23] . The author of the soundtracks is Taku Iwasaki , who were used in the anime adaptation of the second part of the Battle Tendency manga [22] [23] .

Criticism

According to critics, the second part of Battle Tendency has a more complex and successful plot than Phantom Blood , and the new character Joseph Joostar is not the embodiment of an ideal person like Jonathan; he reveals different aspects of his personality, and therefore turned out to be a more interesting and strong character than Jonathan [24] . Anime Planet journalist notes that if in the first part the main characters are, of course, the good Jonathan and the villain Dio, then the plot of the second part represents a rogue hero who is even ready to cooperate with the Nazis to achieve his goal, but at the same time not without nobility, as well as mysterious villains, each of which has its own morality. Thanks to this, the outcome of the battle becomes more unpredictable and exciting. The plot turned out to be dynamic, reminiscent of stories about Indiana Jones [25] . On the one hand, Battle Tendency can be considered a solid action movie, an important support for the rest of the JoJo manga [26] . The second part of Battle Tendency is recognized by critics as already more interesting [27] and dynamic, standing on the same level with the rest of the battle shonen manga. Nevertheless, it is recognized as one of the weakest arches of the JoJo series [28] . A critic of the ootb-media website, on the contrary, called Battle Tendency one of the most striking and successful parts of the JoJo franchise: the poses that the characters take [29] look especially impressive.

A representative of the site Nihonreview called the anime adaptation a classic sainen in a modern interpretation and praised the series for clearly following the plot of the manga, the rich color of the picture and sound effects. At the same time, he noted the relatively poor quality of the graphics [30] . According to the American magazine Otaku USA , the anime series became one of the best animes of 2012 [31] , while low-budget graphics were noted, which makes the visual style of the characters sometimes look ridiculous [32] . Another representative of the site kotaku noted that the anime series seeks in all its aspects to come closer to the original manga, starting with the plot and ending with the actions and rendering of the characters. On the other hand, it really spoils the series, as the plot is replete with comments that come from the narrator or observer characters, especially during battles; it also turned out to be very concise and short in terms of anime. Among the merits, the critic noted that the series is full of unusual and bright colors, and battle scenes almost always take place at night or in a dark room [33] . The plot of Battle Tendency , according to the critic, turned out to be generally more successful than Phantom Blood . The plot becomes more complex and exciting, the new concept of vampires - more interesting, but most importantly - this is an attractive hero, distinguished by wit and cunning. An unusual feature of the plot is that as it develops, the German Nazis become the new allies of the main characters, and this is justified to stop the ancient evil of the Aztec vampires. On the other hand, new villains do not reach such pathos as Dio Brando’s [34] .

Awaken, My Masters

The Internet meme - Awaken, My Masters ( Rus. Awake, my hosts ) is widely used on the Internet. Its basis was the scene from the 64th chapter of the manga (1988), which shows the awakening of the "people from the columns", the main villains of the Battle Tendecy . Characters with extremely muscular bodies adopt "defiant", erotic poses. This fact undermines the severity of the atmosphere of the appearance of enemies. The meme appeared back in 2008, but was known among a narrow circle of manga fans. After the adaptation of the manga in 2013, the popularity of the meme has increased significantly, and the released remixes in 2014 on Youtube gained millions of views. The music “Awaken” ( Taku Iwasaki ) accompanying the anime-adaptation scene also became part of the meme [35] .
