Bridges
Recently bridges have appeared on the places of various crossings on the route. For , in the , a bridge was built across the Nickerie River, in 1980, in the Stolkertsaver district, through Kommeveine, in 1999, through , which allowed getting from Ennie to Boscamp, in 2000, Jules Bridge Weydenbosch , connecting Paramaribo and Mesogue, on June 25, 2011 - through Saramakka, which simplified the way from Hamburg to [1] .
In the southern part of the road in the area of Bitagron and camp number 52, mechanized bridges appeared across the Coppename and Nikkeri, respectively.
Reconstruction
A number of sections of the road were significantly damaged after the end of the partisan war in Suriname . Currently, various projects are being implemented aimed at their reconstruction.
Western part
For a long time, the stretch of road between Niev-Nikkeri and the crossing in the region of Zeddrain remained in poor condition. In 2007, the European Union allocated EUR 13.2 million for reconstruction [2] [3] . It was planned that the latter will end in the first quarter of 2010 [4] .
Between Zeddraynom and Apura, that is, between the northern and southern part of the route, there is an off-road, which is driven by jeeps. Currently, in contrast to the earlier plans, road paving is not a priority [5] .
Eastern part
The eastern part of the road, located between Mesogue and Albina, is currently in a state of repair, for which the European Union, the French Development Agency and the Inter-American Development Bank have allocated funds. In August 2009, an executive body of the project was established, the purpose of which is to ensure the implementation of quality guidelines and further planning. The total budget amounted to 140 million US dollars. According to the project, the reconstruction concerns 138 km of the road and should be completed after 30 months. In its course, it is worth adhering to the standards established by the [6] [7] [8] .
In March 2010, the Dutch company MNO Vervat began to restore the road section between (20.5 km) and Mungo (95 km). The section of the highway between Mungo and Albina will be repaired by the Chinese company Dalian. The reconstruction of the section between Mesog (0 km) and Tamanreydo will be completed in 2011 . The road will undergo expansion in a number of areas, and cycling tracks will appear on the built-up parts of the area [9] .
Southern part
The Government of Suriname is committed to restoring the southern part of the road in 2010–2015 [10] . The project of the Regional Infrastructure Integration Initiative in South America places space in the 3rd group of the hub region of the Guyana Shield, connecting Ciudad Guayana in Venezuela and Paramaribo and passing through , Linden and Apura. The project plan includes the construction of a bridge over the Qurantaine between Apura and Oreallo in Guyana [11] [12] . According to a study conducted by Pitau van Dyck, the Linden-Paramaribo section is currently of secondary importance for IIRCLA [11] .
Communication with frontier states
In 1998, in the western part of the East-West highway, a ferry service was established between Zedrain and in Guyana [13] . In the eastern part of the crossing between Albina and Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni in French Guiana was established in 1969 .
In the framework of the Institute of Management and Engineering Studies, the planning department of Suriname conducted a series of studies concerning the connection of the East-West highway with the Pan-American Highway , which the Suriname project began in 1982 . Regardless of the reconstruction of the road, an economic assessment of the feasibility of building a bridge between Suriname and French Guiana was carried out [14] [15] . The connection of the North-South highway through the mountains of Vir Gebruders with Brazil is also under discussion [10] .
