Dumas is a city in the United States located in upstate Texas , the administrative center of Moore County . According to the 2010 census, the number of inhabitants was 14 691 people, according to the US Census Bureau in 2016, 14 916 people lived in the city [2] .

History

The city was named after Luis Dumas, president of the Panhandle Townsite Company from Sherman , who bought land near the planned railway. In 1891, Dumas and his associates founded the Moore County Townsite Company and marked the city 8 kilometers to the South Rado Duro Creek Creek. The company’s office, hotel, shop and post office were located in the first building of the city. The following year, the Moore district was formed and Dumas became the administrative center of the new district [3] .

The invasion of grasshoppers in 1893 led to the fact that the city almost ceased to exist. Even Louis Dumas lost all hope and returned to Grayson . For several years in a row, only one family lived in the city, in 1900 the only working business in Dumas was Arthur Nild's store. The city grew rapidly after the announcement of the Enid, Ochiltree and Western Railroad plans to go to Dumas. Despite the fact that the plans were not implemented, the population of the city grew to about 200 people, new commercial establishments appeared. In 1918, a ginning machine appeared in the city [3] .

In 1926, oil was discovered in the region; Shamrock Oil and Gas and other oil companies came to the city. In 1931, the North Plains and Santa Fe Railway passed through Dumas, connecting Amarillo and . Despite the dusty boiler , the population of Dumas continued to grow, in 1936 a zinc smelter was opened in the city, and World War II increased the demand for oil and stimulated the further growth of the city. On July 29, 1956, the largest disaster in the region, a fire at the Shamrock-McKee factory, occurred near the city. The accident claimed the lives of 9 factory workers and 10 firefighters [3] .

According to the 2010 census, 14,691 people lived in the city, there were 4,979 households and 3,725 families. Racial composition of the city: 74.9% are white , 2% are African - Americans , 0.9% are Native Americans, 4.7% are Asians , 0% (6 people) are residents of Hawaii or Oceania, 15.6% are others races, 1.8% - two or more races. The number of Hispanic residents of any race was 50.5% [8] .

Out of 4979 households, children under 18 live in 43.8%. 56.7% of households were married couples (27% with children under 18 years of age), in 12.1% of households women lived without husbands, in 6% of households men lived without wives, 25.2% of households were not families. Only one person lived in 20.9% of households, 8% were single elderly people (over 65). The average household size was 2.92 people. The average family size is 3.4 people [8] .
