Edition History

On the pages of the collection regularly posted materials about dogs of service breeds, their origin, features of the constitution, exterior , behavior and human use for various purposes. Readers were offered articles on the use of dogs in the Soviet Army during the Great Patriotic War for sledding , mine search, guard , sentry and intelligence services, communications services and other auxiliary purposes. Some materials were devoted to the use of dogs in the border troops, troops and bodies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs , in railway transport, for grazing sheep flocks, searching for ores and gas leaks, rescuing drowning people covered with snow avalanches and other natural disasters, as guides for blind, sled dogs in the transcontinental expedition from Uelen to Murmansk [2] , carried out in 1982-1983 (known as the " Polar expedition of the newspaper" Soviet Russia " " [3] ).

A significant amount in the collection was publications on pedigree work aimed at the systematic improvement of dogs of service breeds, providing the Armed Forces of the USSR and the national economy with high-quality young dogs [4] . The materials published in the collection reflected the main trends in breeding of service breeds in the USSR, where pedigree types of dogs developed taking into account local needs and often had significant differences from foreign analogues. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, many specially bred domestic breed types ( East European type of German shepherd , Moscow guard , Moscow diver , etc.) were lost or significantly reduced their population. The central place in the collection was assigned to the leading service breed in the USSR - the German (East European) shepherd [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] . Articles disclosed the practice of breeding, its achievements and mistakes, tasks for the coming period. The necessity of basing all breeding work on modern scientific data and advanced zootechnical experience was emphasized [4] .
