The scientist's elder brother is an astrophysicist and writer Jayant Vishnu Narlikar (also an academician of INAN, NANI and IAN). [four]

He graduated, bachelor's and master's degrees in physics (1960) at the Benares Hindu University in Varanasi. During the year, he studied the growth and defects of crystals under the direction of . In 1961 he left to continue his education in the UK and in 1965 received a Ph.D. from Cambridge University in the field of superconductivity. Over the next few years, he continued research on superconductivity in post-doctoral studies at Lancaster (1965-1968) and Geneva (1968-1969) universities.

In 1969 he returned to India, receiving the position of professor and head. Department of Physics at the in Kolhapur.

In the summer of 1970, he married a linguist (a specialist in Sanskrit and Indian literature in English) and a journalist Aruna Bhavalkar. The daughter of Anant and Aruna, , subsequently made an international academic career in political economics. [five]

After working for several years at the University of Shivaji, in 1972 he transferred to the Tata Institute of Basic Research in Bombay, and later to the National Physical Laboratory in New Delhi, where he conducted research and participated in the management of the laboratory for the next 30 years.

In 1988 he was elected to the Indian Academy of Sciences, and in 1990 - to the National Academy of Sciences of India / Allahabad Academy of Sciences [1] [2] .

In the early 2000s, he resigned from his post at the National Physical Laboratory, but continued to work and teach as a visiting specialist / professor at universities and research centers in various countries, including the UK, Germany, Israel, China, Russia, Finland, France and Switzerland. From 2013 to the present, he has been working as a visiting specialist in the laboratory of cushioning superconductivity and low temperature research at the University of Cambridge [6] .

During his career, he published more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed scientific periodicals and wrote or was the editor of about 50 books on superconductivity.
