History
The Labor Party of Suriname was founded in July 1, 1987 by a group of public figures, which included Fred Derby , Siegfried Gilds and Allan Lee Fo Soyoi . In contrast to the parties that existed at that time, which were oriented along ethnic lines, the LPS wanted to unite people of all nationalities. The party included workers, farmers, women, youth and progressive intelligentsia. Fred Derby was elected party leader. In the 1987 elections , the Front for Democracy and Development won, and the Labor Party of Suriname did not receive a single seat in the National Assembly . The government formed after these elections was overthrown by the military as a result of a telephone coup . In the next election, which took place in 1991 , the Labor Party of Suriname joined the New Front for Democracy and Development coalition. The coalition managed to get 30 seats in parliament, three of which went to the LPS. In the government of Ronald Venetian, the Labor Party of Suriname received three ministerial seats.
- Clifford Marika - Minister of Labor, Technology Development and the Environment;
- Siegfried Gilds - Minister of Justice and Police;
- Guno Castelen is Minister for Transport, Communications and Tourism.
In 2001, after the death of Fred Derby, the party was led by Siegfried Gilds. In the 2005 election , the party won two seats in the National Assembly. This made it possible to obtain two ministerial portfolios for party members:
- Clifford Marika - Minister of Labor, Technology Development and the Environment;
- Siegfried Gilds - Minister of Commerce and Industry.
In May 2009, Siegfried Gilds was sentenced to a year in prison for money laundering and attempted pressure on witnesses. The party was headed by Juno Castelen, who in the 2010 elections became a deputy of the National Assembly [1] .
