After the start of the Portuguese colonization of Brazil for a long time, there were no mints on its territory, and absolutely all coins that fell on its territory (mainly Spanish) were used in circulation. The first coins in Brazil were minted by the Dutch in 1645–1646 during the siege of Pernambuco .
On March 8, 1694, King Pedro II the Placid issued a decree on the opening of the Mint in Bahia . In 1699, the courtyard was transferred to Rio de Janeiro , a year later - to Pernambuco, where he worked until 1702. In 1703 the mint was again transferred to Rio de Janeiro. Then several more mints were opened: in Bahia (1714), Vila-Rica (1724-1734) [2] .
In 1868 a new mint building was opened in Rio de Janeiro. In 1984, the courtyard was transferred to the newly built industrial complex in the area of Santa Cruz.
