Biography

Somraj Robbie Sohangsingh was born in Parpamaribo on June 4, 1945 in a large Indosurinamian family. He is the second child and eldest son of eight children. Sohangsingh was a creatively gifted person. He was fond of playing the accordion , saxophone and piano and composed music. Having completed his education with a specialization in business management, he began to help his father in family affairs. His father owned a transport company in Paramaribo. Subsequently, he sold it and founded a new business related to the production of building material - crushed stone. Sohangsingh Jr. was responsible for the production process and reached such proportions that Suriname stopped importing crushed stone from abroad.

Married to Astrid Kanhai, he had three children. Sohangsingh survived the abduction of a five-year-old son, who, fortunately for his parents, was found alive. But criminals escaped punishment due to a military coup in 1980. Sohangsingh did not accept the new regime and opposed the coup. He was especially indignant at the arrogance of the courageous sergeants who began to appropriate the country's natural resources. His father was arrested on suspicion of corruption, the case concerned government procurement, but was soon released for lack of evidence.

For open disagreement with the regime’s power, Sohangsingh was defined by the putschists as a “counter-revolutionary”. He was arrested for facilitating the coup attempt that the Rambocus and Seombar military made in March 1982. His shaved head was shown on state television. During a month in jail, he was mistreated, and he soon ended up in a military hospital. After his release, Sohangsingh returned to business. At the trial in November 1982, he was fully acquitted. His lawyer was John Baburam .

On December 8, 1982, Sohangsingh, among fourteen other citizens, including his lawyer, was captured by the military at home and imprisoned in Fort Zealand, where he was killed the same day after severe torture. Serious injuries and traces of gunshot wounds in the front of the body were found on his body, given to relatives for burial. Sohangsingh was buried on December 13, 1982 at the Sarva-Uday cemetery in Paramaribo. Officials charged him with collaborating with the CIA and financing the coup.
