Biography
Helen Vita Elizabeth Reichel-Baumgartner was born on August 7, 1928 in Hohenschwangau ( Germany ). Her father was a concertmaster, and her mother a cellist. In 1939, the family was forced to leave Germany and went to their father’s home country Switzerland.
After studying at the conservatory, de Geneva made her stage debut in Paris (1946).
In 1956, Helen married film composer Walter Baumgartner (1904-1997), they had two sons.
In 1966, Vita recorded Freche Chansons aus dem alten Frankreich, a traditional French chanson translated into German. The explicit content of the songs was under the scrutiny of the courts in Germany until the 1968 protests.
She was considered one of the most popular cabaret artists in Germany and a chanson performer, performing on stage mainly with pianist Paul Klein until his death in 1989.
In the 1990s, along with Evelyn Künneke and Brigitte Mira, she toured with the successful stage show “Drei alte Schachteln” (“Three Old Bags”).
October 3, 1997, the 92-year-old husband of Vita died. Less than four years later, on February 16, 2001 , Helen, 72, died of cancer in Berlin.
