Biography

Stefanus Joseph Maria Magdalena Kuipers was born in Borkel on July 22, 1899 in the family of the mayor of the city and a housewife. September 22, 1911 he entered the Redemptorists' Small Seminary in Roermond. On September 5, 1919, he entered the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, and on September 30, 1920 he took monastic vows . He studied philosophy and theology at the seminary in Wittima. October 10, 1925 was ordained a priest. In November 1926, the leadership of the congregation sent him to the colony of Suriname for missionary work [1] [2] .

A mission in Dutch Guiana since 1865 has been in the introduction of the Redeptorists with the blessing of Pope Pius IX . In 1939, The Apostolic Vicar of the Netherlands Guiana Theodorus van Rosmalen went on vacation to the Netherlands, and Kuipers was appointed apostolic vicar, that is, deputy apostolic vicar. The occupation of the Netherlands during World War II did not allow Rosmalen to return to Paramaribo, and he soon asked to be sent to his retirement. On February 16, 1945, Kuipers was appointed vice-provincial of the Redemptorists in Suriname, and on February 8, 1946, Pope Pius XII appointed him the Apostolic Vicar of Dutch Guiana and elevated him to the rank of titular Bishop of Termessus. The Kuipers bishop consecration was headed on June 10, 1946 by Willem Peter Adrian Maria Mütsars, bishop of Hertogenbosz, who was served by Joseph Hubert Willem Lemmens, Bishop of Roermond and Joseph Willem Maria Baten, titular bishop of Dorileum [1 ] .

On April 28, 1958, the Apostolic Vicariate of Dutch Guiana was elevated to the diocese of Paramaribo, and on May 8 of the same year, Kuipers was appointed first bishop of this diocese. August 24, 1958 he ascended to the department. He ruled the diocese until August 30, 1971, when he was sent to rest upon reaching adulthood. His successor in the department was the first Catholic bishop of Surinamese origin, Aloysius Zihem. Kuipers spent the last years of his life in the Netherlands at the Nebokloster Monastery in Nijmegen. He died on July 5, 1986 [1] [2] .
