Biography

Born in 1968 in the vicinity of Mandalay . At the age of 14, he dropped out of school and became a monk. In 2001, he joined the movement 969 [1] . Activities

In September 2012, he led a rally in support of the plan proposed by President Thein Sein to expel Rohingya Muslims living in Myanmar [5] . A month later, another outbreak of violence occurred in Rakhine State . Virathu said the reason for this was an incident that occurred in the city of Meithila , when the conflict in the jewelry store escalated into a series of robberies and arsons. More than 14 people died, a number of monasteries, shops and houses were burned [6] [7] . At least two more people were attacked and tortured [8] [9] .

After that, an article on Viratha was published in Time magazine, entitled The Face of Buddhist Terror [10] . Virathu also stated that he wants to protect society following the example of the English Defense League [11] .

The government of the Irrawaddy district prohibited Viratha from conducting preaching activities in the region [12] .
