Academic Jihad (Iran)

Academic Jihad ( Pers. جهاد دانشگاهی , English The Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research, ACECR ) is an Iranian public non-governmental organization engaged in cultural, research and educational activities [1] . The head is Hamidreza Taebi.

Creation History

On August 7, 1980 (the 16th muzzle of 1359 according to the Iranian calendar), the Supreme Headquarters of the Cultural Revolution in Iran established the organization Academic Jihad in order to conduct a cultural revolution in the country. On December 2, 1986 ( Azar 11, 1365), the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution considered and approved the charter of the Academic Jihad, which spoke about actions in the cultural and scientific research field with the aim of Islamizing higher educational institutions. On November 5, 1991 (14 Aban 1370), the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution finally approved the new charter, according to which the responsibilities of the Academic Jihad include scientific and cultural activities.

In 1993, Academic Jihad began to create subsidiary non-profit higher education institutions. Branches appeared in such cities as Ahvaz , Isfahan , Rasht , Hamadan , Kashmer , Erdekan , Ashkezar and Yazd . Three branches in the provinces of Khuzestan , Yazd and Isfahan have become independent higher education institutions, which are controlled by a special Council of Observers [1] .

Academic Jihad Objectives

The objectives of the Academic Jihad are the following: (1) development of the research field; (2) the development of the cultural sphere together with universities and departments; (3) development of a plan for the further use of research results.

Tasks of Academic Jihad

The objectives of the Academic Jihad include the following: (1) promotion of the culture and art of Islam; (2) the fight against Westernism; (3) conducting applied research; (4) support for talented students and scientists; (5) creation of conditions for the employment of graduates [1] .

Responsibilities of Academic Jihad

1. Conducting fundamental and applied research and development in the field of physics, biology, geology, mathematics and related trends.

2. Implementation of research projects and cooperation in the implementation of their semi-industrial and industrial stages.

3. The study, identification and assistance in satisfying the research needs of the manufacturing and executive sectors, as well as the services sector in the field of basic sciences.

4. Creation of necessary opportunities on the basis of research programs and projects.

5. Establishing active and constructive ties with the universities of the University Jihad organization, with scientific institutions and societies both in the country and abroad within the framework of existing rules.

6. Establishing the necessary contacts with innovative specialists working in scientific centers of the country, and cooperation with them in the implementation of their research projects in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Institute.

7. Use of the latest research and development results at all stages of the research as part of the expansion of the Institute's tasks.

8. Preparation and conduct of scientific and practical training together with universities, as well as research and educational courses of higher education.

9. The publication of scientific books and periodicals.

Council of Academic Jihad Observers

The Council of Observers includes 9 people: 4 members of the Academic Jihad, 4 government representatives and a representative of the Supreme Leader in higher education. Thus, the composition of the Council directly depends on political changes in the country. Hamidreza Taebi is currently chairing the Observer Council.

The Structure of Academic Jihad

Academic Jihad consists of the Department of Support and Parliamentary Affairs, the Research Department, the Cultural Department, the Employment Department, and other divisions and research institutes. The structure of the Academic Jihad includes 39 units (14 of them are located in Tehran, the rest are in other cities). Currently, the organization employs 680 scientists and teachers and 1,600 assistants. Also, a huge number of industry experts, university staff and graduate students collaborate with the institution, working part-time [2] .

Support Department

The support department deals with administrative and financial matters.

Research department

The research department performs such tasks as: conducting applied research, creating developments, consulting, providing scientific and technical services, using the results of projects.

Cultural department

The scope of the Cultural Department includes: the development of the culture and art of Islam, the increase of religious and political knowledge among young people with the aim of combating Westernism.

Employment Department

The employment department creates conditions for the employment of university graduates.

Financing

More than 80% of annual financing comes from the private sector of the economy from companies with which the organization collaborates. Less than 20% - from public funds.

Research Results

In 2015, scientists led by Ceyvan Majzadeh developed a new trastuzumap prescription - a medicine against breast cancer. The new technology is based on the use of bacteria [3] .

Achievements

- 22 awards in the international al-Khwarizmi award (English Khwarazmi International Award) in the field of science and technology;

- 9 awards at the Razi Medical Science Festival (Razi Medical Science Festival);

- More than 100 awards in national research festivals [5] .

- Repeated receipt of category “A” among institutions subordinate to the Ministry of Science

- Title of the best research institution in 2011 - Certificate of Merit of the Minister of Science, Research and Technology

In addition, the Institute was elected by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology as the leading inter-university institution in the field of combating environmental pollution resulting from the burning of fossil fuels, using biological methods.
