History
Mingarri Castle was originally built in the 13th century (but some extensions were built closer to the 17th century ) either by the MacDougal clan or the Macdonald clan of Ardnamirkhan. King James IV of Scotland used the fortress as a stronghold to fight the Donald clan at the end of the 15th century . [2]
In 1515, the castle was besieged by the MacDonald clan from Lohals, and then again two years later, when they finally managed to capture the castle. In 1588, the leader of the Clan MacLane lived in the fortress, after the capture of the leader of the clan MacDonald from Ardnamurkhan. In 1588, one of the ships of the Spanish armada , called San Juan de Sicily, sailed to the Mull Strait, and the leader of the Clan MacLane used troops from the ship to fight against the MacDonald clan from Clanranald and against the Macdonald clan from Ardnamirkhan. Before the ship sailed back, the troops besieged the castle for three days, but to no avail. [3]
In 2006, the Wreck Detectives team on Channel 4 went in search of a shipwreck in the Mull Strait, right under the castle. A crash was soon discovered. Date (shipwreck) - 1644 .
A 2013 study showed that the main wall of the castle from the sea is in danger and could soon collapse. All reconstruction work is led by the Mingary Castle Preservation and Restoration Trust . [four]
