Biography
The son of the famous Latvian composer Emil Melngailis . Tenis taught chess to play his father, who himself was a strong chess player. Already in 1936, Tennis Melngailis, as part of the Latvian team, took part in the unofficial Chess Olympiad in Munich , where he played the first spare board (+4, = 1, −5) [1] In 1938, following the results of the Latvian Chess Championship in the 2nd international chess tournament in Kemeri , where he shares 11th - 12th places in strong competition [2] In 1939, in Buenos Aires, for the second time, he represented the Latvian team at the Chess Olympiad on the first reserve board (+4, = 3, −1). After returning to Latvia, he is ranked seventh in the tournament of candidates for the Latvian national team in Riga [3] . During the Second World War, from 1943 to 1944, he led the Latvian Chess Union. In the early postwar years, continues to actively participate in various chess tournaments. In 1946 in Riga he won the All-Union Tournament of the I category and received the title of Candidate Master in Chess in the USSR [4] . In the same year, it divides the 3rd - 5th place on the Fritz Apszhek memorial [5] . In 1947, divides the 3rd - 4th place on the memorial of Herman Mathison [6] . In the 1940s and in the 1950s, he conducted a chess department in a youth magazine “Bērnība”. In subsequent years, due to the deterioration of health, the results of Tennis Melngailis in chess tournaments have declined, and since the mid-1950s he has gradually ceased his chess performances.
He was buried at the Forest cemetery in Riga [7] .
