Biography

Aloysius Ferdinandus Siehem was born in Paramaribo on February 28, 1933. September 8, 1955 joined the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, where on August 14, 1960 he was ordained a priest [1] .

On October 2, 1969, his pope Paul VI appointed him auxiliary bishop of Paramaribo and elevated him to the rank of titular bishop of Fuerteventura. On 8 February 1970, the Episcopal consecration of Zihem was led by Stefanus Kuypers, Bishop of Paramaribo, who was served by Cardinal Bernard Jan Alfric , Archbishop of Utrecht and Joannes Maria Michael Holterman , OP , Bishop of Willemstad . His motto, he chose the phrase "Love transfers everything" ( lat. Amore Traxit Omnia ) [1] .

On August 30, 1971, Zihem became the second bishop of Paramaribo. He ascended to the department on October 24 of that year. On January 1, 2003, the bishop suffered a stroke . As a result, he was forced to petition for retirement. On August 9, 2003, his petition was granted by the Holy See [2] . Wilhelmus de Becker, who was born and trained in the Netherlands, became the successor to Zihem in the department of Paramaribo.

Zichem was the first Surinamese to lead the community of the Roman Catholic Church in Suriname . All of his predecessors are Dutch . He died in Paramaribo on November 13, 2016 and was buried on November 20 of the same year, after the requiem in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul [1] .
