The political parties of Suriname play an important role in the life of the country. Suriname is a parliamentary republic in which the system of governing the country is representative democracy . Executive power depends on parliament. Legislative power belongs to both the government and the National Assembly . Suriname has a multi-party system with many parties . Due to their large numbers, political parties rarely have a chance to gain power alone. Therefore, parties must form a coalition government .
