He was the Welsh prince of the Aberfrau dynasty , who is sometimes credited with the short reign of Gwynedd. His father, Iago ap Idwal ap Meirig , was the king before him, and his son, Grifid , became the king after him.

His father was King of Gwynedd from 1023 to 1039, but was killed (possibly by his own people), while Keenan was still young. The throne was captured by Grifid ap Llewelyn , because of which Keenan fled to Ireland, to Dublin. There he married Ragnilda, daughter of King Dublin Olaf Sigtriggsson .

Keenan may have died quite soon after the birth of their son, Grifid, since the story of Grifid ap Kinan in the 13th century described the genealogy of Kinan, but omitted it from his story about the youth of Grifid. Instead, the mother of Gruffudd tells him about his father and about the possessions across the sea, which he should demand [1] . After two major Saxon incursions led by Harold and Tostig , Grifid ap Livelyn was killed in 1063: later the Welsh Chronicle of Princes reports that he was killed by his own people, while the Ulster Chronicle claimed that he was killed by the Keenan people . If Keenan ruled, then this was not very long, since Bledin up Kinvin became the ruler of Gwynedd through the Saxons.
