Suriname Society

Suriname Society ( Dutch: Sociëteit van Suriname ) is a Dutch private company that was the idea of Jean-Baptiste Colbert and was created on May 21, 1683 to profit from the management and defense of the Dutch colony - the Republic of Suriname .

These were three participants with equal rights (shares) in expenses and benefits of the company; the city of Amsterdam, the Van Aersen family of Van Sommelsdijk and the Dutch West Indies Company . Only on the basis of mutual consent could these shareholders leave the company.

Although the organization and administration of the colony was limited to these three shareholders, all citizens of the Dutch Republic were free to trade with Suriname. In addition, the planters consulted with the Police Council, which was a unique feature among the Guyana colony.

Its rulers were Cornelis van Aersen van Sommelsdijk, Johan van Scharfusen and Paulus van der Vin.

The society was nationalized by the Batavian Republic in November 1795 , since Patriotent considered the management of the colonies with the help of chartered companies a thing of the past.
