Niagara Peninsula

Niagara Peninsula on a map of Southern Ontario

Niagara Peninsula (English Niagara Peninsula) is a part of Southern Ontario , Canada, located between the southern shore of Lake Ontario and the northern shore of Lake Erie , the Niagara River in the east and the city of Hamilton in the west. The population of the peninsula is approximately 1 million people. The area near the source of Niagara from Lake Erie is known as the Niagara Frontier.

Administratively, most of the Niagara Peninsula is part of the regional municipality of Niagara. Another part of the peninsula administratively refers to Hamilton and County Haldimand.

History

Initially, the territory was inhabited by Indian tribes who traded freely among themselves and with the two largest warring tribal unions living in the Great Lakes region: the Hurons and the Iroquois (in their conflict, the mentioned tribes adhered to neutrality). During the so-called Beaver Wars a significant part of the Iroquois was destroyed. After the US War of Independence, the Loyalists settled here, having left the rebel colonies. Niagara Peninsula was one of the first territories that formed the so-called Upper Canada .

The administrative center of the new colony was the city of Niagara-on-the-Lake . During the Anglo-American War (1812-1815), the Americans made several attempts to occupy a strategically important area, but they all ended unsuccessfully, including because of the fierce resistance of almost the entire population, including the French, Indians and British loyalists.

At the first stage of colonization, agriculture spread in the peninsula — horticulture and viticulture (thanks to a suitable climate) [1] are still important components of its economy — but over time the region turned into a predominantly industrial area. An important role was played by the erected water mill, and later - the construction of the Welland Canal and the hydroelectric power station at Niagara Falls. Today, the tourism industry is developing in the region.
