Otto, who was then 21 years old, admitted to stealing a poster of political propaganda and was sentenced to 15 years of forced labor. [4] The United States made diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Warmbury. A US Department of State spokesman said Wormbier’s harsh punishment was a response to U.S. sanctions against North Korea for its nuclear activities. According to his father, Fred Wormbier, Wormbier’s confession was forced, and he was abducted by the North Korean government for political purposes. [5]
Wormbear fell into a coma in North Korea and was returned to the United States in June 2017, after almost 18 months in North Korea [5] [6] . According to North Korean authorities, the student's coma was the result of botulism and sleeping pills, but US doctors have questioned this statement [7] . Otto arrived in Cincinnati on June 13 and was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for immediate evaluation and treatment. He was diagnosed with a severe neurological injury. His father believes that he was “terrorized and ill-treated” [8] [9] [10] .
Six days after returning to his homeland, on June 19, 2017, Otto died at the without regaining consciousness [11] . His parents refused an autopsy.
According to a BBC publication, Otto Wormbier allegedly could have infiltrated the private floor of the Yangakto Hotel where he lived [12] .
Expert Opinion
The attempt to repeat the proven technique and gain propaganda points turned into a PR disaster, which the DPRK is now very inappropriate. The fate of Warmbier reinforces the idea of the DPRK as a country governed by a cruel and irrational regime, from which literally everything can be expected - and, accordingly, it pours water on the mill of those who believe that a “preventive” military operation against such a regime is not only morally justifiable , but also strategically rational [13] .
