After the fall of Kamenetz-Podolsky , part of the Ottoman army of Sultan Mehmed IV , led by Kaplan Pasha, along with Zaporizhzhya Cossacks Petro Doroshenko and the Tatars moved into the depths of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the Russian Voivodeship . The total number of troops reached 50,000 soldiers. Tatars with part of the Cossack and Turkish units began to devastate the area.

September 20, 1672 the combined forces besieged Lviv.

The garrison of Lviv, commanded by Eliash Jan Lontsky, totaled 500 soldiers, which were joined by residents of the city and surrounding villages.

On September 12 (22), Tatars appeared under the walls of Lviv, and Cossacks and Turks on September 14 (24) . Kaplan Pasha demanded the surrender of the city. On September 17 (27), artillery bombardment of the city began, undermines were made under the walls, preparations were underway for the assault. On September 20 (30), the situation of the besieged became critical.

The Turks of Sultan Mehmed IV , having mastered Mount Shembek (Vronovsky), built on it a complex of powerful earthen fortifications (shants), from which they quite successfully fired Lvov from the cannons.

Cossacks and Turks began to dig, while preparing for the assault. During one of them, the High Castle was captured on September 27, but the next day the defenders of Lviv recaptured it.

As a result of continuous shelling on September 29, a breach was breached in the walls of the city.

The townspeople asked Petro Doroshenko to persuade Kaplan Pasha and the Tatar Khan to be satisfied with the ransom. With his mediation, negotiations began on September 30, and ended on October 6, 1672. The Turkish army and Cossacks retreated from the city, receiving a large ransom.
