Background
At the beginning of 1664, a detachment of Russian voevoda G. I. Kosagov and Zaporozhyan Koshev I. D. Serko reappeared in Right-Bank Ukraine , returning from Perekop , where he fought with the Crimean Tatars . The detachment acted quite successfully, attracting a large number of local residents to the side of the Russian Tsar . Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth sent one of its best commanders against him - Stefan Charnetsky , who became famous in the battles against the Russians and had a reputation as a tough and fearless military leader.
Charnetsky came to Ukraine at the moment when the main ally of the Poles from among the Cossack leaders, P. I. Teterya , barely left the pursuit of hetman I. Bryukhovetsky , a supporter of Russia. Bryukhovetsky was going to deliver a new blow to the enemy, going with the faithful Cossacks under Chigirin , one of the main fortresses of the Right Bank. Teter decided not to tempt fate, and when rumors of Bryukhovetsky was approaching, he fled to Poland. However, he managed to call on the help of the Crimean Tatars and Stefan Charnetsky, hoping for his cavalry. Bryukhovetsky himself, meeting resistance under Chigirin, did not dare to besiege the city and turned back to Kanev, and Kosagov and Serko had to restrain the onslaught of the enemy [3] .
Kosagov sought to get away from a direct collision in the field, where the advantage would be on the side of Charnetsky. The whole of April was occupied by “hiding” from the Poles who were attacking in the fortresses that fell along the way: first Kosagov and Serko sat out in Buzhin , then they went to the fortress of Smela , after which they finally left the Right Bank. This was not the last meeting of Kosagov with Charnetsky. In the autumn of 1664, without Serko's support, the Russian voivode, on his way to Uman, was forced to withstand the siege again, this time in Medvin .
The course of the siege
A detachment of Charnetsky, which included, in addition to the Poles, a part of Teteri’s supporters (the returning Teter himself besieged Lisyanka [1] ) and the Crimean Tatars, outnumbered the enemy, so Kosagov once again chose to shy away from a field battle, locked up in the city. However, the Polish commander also experienced difficulties: Polish infantrymen and Tatars demanded payment for service, and in addition, they began to starve. Food and fodder at the request of Charnetsky was prepared for no more than six weeks, and this period has already passed.
The siege lasted four weeks. All “violent attacks ” [3] were repulsed. The Russian detachment lost only one person killed, while the enemy suffered much more noticeably: according to G. I. Kosagov, "... near Medvin many Lyakhovs and Germans were killed in the battles and fights" [2] . After that, Charnetsky and Teteria, seeing the damage in people, lifted the siege, and Kosagov moved to Kanev, on the way on December 12, defeating the Polish-Cossack detachment near Staroboriem [3] ; in Kanev, according to the received royal decree, he surrendered all military people to the stolnik Fedor Protasiev, and he left for Belgorod [1] .
