During the period of feudal fragmentation, several mints existed on the territory of Belgium. While Belgium was part of the Spanish Netherlands , and then the Austrian Netherlands, the mint in Brussels minted Habsburg coins. At this time, the image of the head of the Archangel Michael began to be used on coins as a symbol of the mint.
In 1695, during the Augsburg League War , Brussels was bombarded by the French army under the command of Marshal Buffler . The mint was destroyed. Around 1700, the La Monnet Theater building was built in its place, and the mint was rebuilt elsewhere.
In 1790, during the period of the Belgian United States , the mint issued coins of this short-lived state.
From 1815 to 1830, the territory of Belgium was part of the Netherlands . The Mint worked as a branch of the Netherlands Mint . In 1832, the courtyard began minting Belgian coins.
In 1969, the name of the company Mint, ( Fr. Hôtel des Monnaies ) was changed to the Royal Mint of Belgium.
On June 20, 2017, a message was published about the termination by the mint of coin minting from 2018. From now on, Belgian coins will be minted at other mints, which will be selected by tendering . The mint itself, as an organization, is preserved, its assay chamber, laboratories and other units remain, and all equipment intended for minting coins is sold. Since 2018, Belgian coins have been minted at the Royal Mint of the Netherlands [1] [2] [3] .
