History
In 1985, the initiator of the revival of the Sami national games was the Soviet and Russian Sami writer and researcher of Sami folklore Alexandra Andreevna Antonova . The forum program was compiled by Antonova taking into account the peculiarities of traditional Sami crafts - reindeer husbandry, fishing and hunting [3] .
The list of competitions includes jumping over sledges, throwing an arcanum ("yartola") "on a trochee" (stuffed deer), running with a stick over rough terrain, rowing on a rowing boat, pulling a rope and shooting from a crossbow [4] . On the river bank there is a struggle in the symbolic fishing “on the bank”. The winner is the one who throws the fishing line with the baubles the farthest into the river. The festival day ends with a game of Sami football (female) [5] . The guests of the festival are offered national Sami dishes - Sami fish soup, potatoes with herring and more.
In recent years, the Sami of Norway and Finland have become guests and participants in the Saami Games.
In 2017, the question raised by the head of the administration of the Kola region, Alexander Pavlovich Likholat, of transferring the Sami Games from Loparskaya to Teriberka and connecting them with the Day of the Murmansk Region (May 28), was disputed by the president of the Kola Sami Association public organization Elena Yakovleva and the head of the Center of the peoples of the North ”by Nadezhda Chuprova and passed in the traditional terms - in the first ten days of September in its traditional place [6] [7] .
