Since 1866, the Republic of Honduras has been issuing its own postage stamps [1] [2] and since 1879 it has been one of the countries participating in the Universal Postal Union (UPU) [3] . Mail Development

The history of the post in Honduras was originally associated with the Spanish colony that existed here (1525-1821) [1] [5] , and then with the inclusion of these lands in the United Provinces of Central America [5] .

A letter of the home-made period , sent around 1810 from Tegucigalpa to Guatemala , with postal notes : oval postmark “Tegucigalpa” , stamp “Viva F VII” (“Long live Ferdinand VII ”) and the number “4” (for the postal rate )

The organization of an independent postal service began after the proclamation of an independent republic in 1839 [2] .

In 1877, new efforts were made to organize the postal service in Honduras [5] . The country joined the UPU on April 1, 1879 [3] [5] .

Since 1926, Honduras has been a member of the Postal Union of American States, Spain and Portugal ( UPAEP ) [4] . On October 1, 1937, Spain entered into circulation an American- Spanish return coupon ( Cupón-respuesta americoespañol ). It was distributed in the countries of this postal union , including Honduras, until February 29, 1956 [6] .

In modern Honduras, the postal service is provided by 3] [4] ( Empresa de Correos de Honduras ) [4] .

Stamp Issues

First Marks

Honduras began issuing its own postage stamps on January 1, 1866 [1] [2] [5] [7] . The national emblem was depicted on the first stamps and the name of the state was indicated [1] : “Correos de Honduras” (“ Post of Honduras”) [2] [5] . However, doubts were expressed that these stamps were received by postal circulation [5] .

Subsequent Issues

In 1877, the stamps of 1866 were overprinted with new denominations . The following year, 1878, a new series of stamps with the inscription "Republica de Honduras" ("Republic of Honduras") [5] was published in Honduras:

At the same time, Honduras became the first state to agree with the notorious New York company on the issue of postage stamps for it, which this company then reprinted in New York for sale to collectors in exchange for the right to issue a new series of stamps annually [5] , as in the illustrations below:

Honduras terminated this contract with Seebeck only in 1895 [5] .

The first commemorative issue was carried out in 1892, and the first postal unit of Honduras was issued in 1940 [1] .

According to L. L. Lepeshinsky [2] , in just the first almost one hundred years, from 1866 to 1963, 554 postage stamps of Honduras were issued , which are characterized by the inscriptions: “Correos de Honduras” (“Post of Honduras”), “Republica de Honduras ” (“ Republic of Honduras ”), “ Servicio postal ” (“ Postal service ”), “ UPU ” (“ Universal Postal Union ”) [2] .

Airmail

Airmail stamps issued by the Honduran postal office bear the inscription “Correo aéreo” (“ Airmail ”), as well as stamps with the overprint “Aéreo correo” (“ Airmail ”) [2] .

The first airmail stamps came into circulation here in 1925 [1] . In this issue, a 10 centavo stamp with a black overprint “Aero correo 25” (“ Airmail . 25 [centavo]”) is known as “ Black Honduras ”, has only four copies, and is considered the rarest airmail stamp in the world [8] .

For the planned first flight from Honduras to New York in 1929, a series of airmail stamps was pre-printed, which was ultimately used to pay for the delivery of ordinary mail , since the flight did not take place [1] .

Honduras Post since 1890 also issued service stamps , including for airmail [1] [2] . The overprint on such stamps reads: “Oficial (“ Official ”). In the period from 1866 to 1963, 80 service marks were issued [2] .

Post and Tax

The Honduran Postal Service has also issued postal and tax stamps since 1941 [1] .

Postal Charities

Honduras was in circulation with postal-charitable stamps , which, in particular, for the period of almost a hundred years (1865-1963), three were issued [2] .

Post-stamps

L. L. Lepeshinsky [2] reports on seven postage stamps that had postal circulation in Honduras [2] .
