Biography
Vire was born in the wadad town of Orb, in the family of a clothmaker. Preparing for the clergy, Vire enrolled at the Montague College of Paris, but early broke with the Catholic Church. The preaching of the new teaching of Vire begins in 1531 in his native city. In 1534 he arrived in Geneva, then worked under the auspices and on behalf of Bern in Neuchâtel and Lausanne. From 1536, Lausanne (at that time dependent on Bern) became the center of the Vire activity, which continued intermittently until 1559. He lectures of theology at the Academy, speaks in a number of apologetic and polemical treatises on the questions of the day, expounds Protestant dogma in a popular form.
The ecclesiastical institutions introduced by Vira in Lausanne were quite in keeping with the spirit of the Calvinist system. As a result, he emerged, especially on the issue of excommunication, of a clash with the Bernese government, which initiated the supremacy of secular power in the affairs of the church. Vira was to leave Lausanne and move to Geneva, where he was received with great honor. In 1561, at the time of the revival of the hopes of the Protestant party in France, Vire was invited to him. The following year, when, by virtue of the January edict, the Protestants had to return the churches they occupied, Wire, despite the mood of the majority, insisted on obedience and generally acted in a conciliatory spirit. In 1566, Wire went at the invitation of the Queen of Navarre , mother of Henry IV, to the Protestant Academy she founded at Orthez and worked there until his death in 1571.
As a writer, Vire had the gift of popularization and some satirical talent. His main goal, he always put training the people. His main essay "Instruction chrétienne en la doctrine de la loy et de l'Evangile" (Geneva, 1564) contains a set of treatises written at different times; with the interpretation of the 10 commandments associated system of morality and politics; there is also a defense of Christianity against atheism and rationalistic theology. Of the other works, Vire is remarkable: “Métamorphose chrétienne” and “Disputations chrétiennes”. To the field of satire belong: "Le Monde à l'empire", "La Physique papale", "Le Monde demoniacle". Most of the works of Vire are written in the form of dialogues.
