History
According to the plan of Betankur, the canal was supposed to feed the Obvodnaya (Betankurovsky) canal of the Nizhny Novgorod Fair in order to provide the possibility of shipping along the latter. Also, the canal waters were used in the first city sewer built under the fair. For food purposes, water from the canal was unsuitable due to the fact that in many places it passed near residential buildings and was polluted there [1] .
In order to maintain the water level in the Obvodny Canal, which was higher than in the Oka , Volga or in the Meshchersky Lake, it was decided to build a 20-kilometer canal from the Pyra River [2] . In addition to Pyra, the canal also included the waters of the Black River, Parasha and several streams. The channel dug in sandy soils was never strengthened [1] .
The channel communicated with Meshchersky Lake and the Volga through a system of locks [1] .
In 1830, due to the destruction of the Pyr canal, the circulation of water through it stopped and water filling of the Bypass channel began to occur only during the flood. In 1835, the restoration of the canal was deemed inappropriate and the canal was finally abandoned [1] .
