Biography

The son of a Lutheran theologian and philosopher . From 1867 he lived in Göttingen , served as a volunteer in the imperial army. From 1871 he studied at the Dresden Academy of Painting under the direction of Julius Schnorr von Karolsfeld and Ludwig Richter , then from 1872-1877 he studied at the Art Academy of Munich with Karl von Piloti , later from 1878 to 1883 he was a student of Eduard von Gebhardt and Wilhelm Zon - in Dusseldorf Academy of Arts .

In Dusseldorf, he showed an interest in military art, and under the influence of Wilhelm Camphausen he became interested in battle painting. His contemporaries who worked in this genre were Karl Rohling and Richard Knotel .

From 1883 to 1884 he lived in Breslau and Dusseldorf , in 1890 - in St. Petersburg .

The author of paintings and drawings reproducing scenes from the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871, the maneuvers of the German army in 1883-1888. One of the samiz famous of his paintings was a canvas depicting German Emperor William I and his soldiers who met him after winning the Battle of Sedan .

In 1890 he visited Russia, where he observed the maneuvers of the German guard corps. Later, he was seconded to the Turkish army and recorded a military conflict between the Turks and Greeks in Thessaly in 1897, the sketches of the battles of the First Greek-Turkish War created by him were published the following year.

In 1900, as the official military artist of the German expeditionary force, he portrayed battle scenes during the Boxer Rebellion ( Ihethuan Rebellion ). In 1910, he covered the scenes of the Albanian national liberation uprising and the hostilities between Turkey and Albania .

Since 1914 - an official military artist on the Western Front of the First World War .

His War Letters , in which he described the fear and destruction caused by the war, were printed in 1916. The autobiography of the artist appeared in 1921.

He died tragically in a tram accident in Dusseldorf .

Among the famous works of Theodore Roholl is a huge mural made for the Bad Godesberg Evangelischen Padagogiums .
