The election of the head of the Republic of Buryatia was held in Buryatia on September 10, 2017 on a single voting day . Direct elections of the head of the republic were held for the first time since 2002 (in 2007 and 2012 the head was appointed by the People's Khural of Buryatia at the proposal of the President of the Russian Federation ).

As of January 1, 2017, 715,422 voters were registered in Buryatia [1] .

Previous Events
Since 2007, the president of the republic was Vyacheslav Nagovitsyn . On May 12, 2012, he was reapproved for the post of head of the republic. Nagovitsyn's term of office expired in May 2017.
In early May 2012, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a law that returned direct elections of regional leaders to Russia. The law entered into force on June 1, 2012.
On February 7, 2017, Vyacheslav Nagovitsin announced his resignation [3] . On the same day, dismissed by decree of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin . Alexey Tsydenov was appointed interim head of the region [4] .

Nomination and registration of candidates
In the Republic of Buryatia, candidates are nominated only by political parties that have the right to participate in elections, or their regional branches. Self-nomination is not allowed [8] .
Each candidate upon registration must submit a list of three people, one of which, if a candidate is elected, will become a representative of the regional government in the Federation Council . [eight]
Municipal Filter
In Buryatia, candidates must collect signatures of 7% of municipal deputies and heads of municipalities. Among them should be the signatures of deputies of district and city councils and (or) heads of regions and city districts in the amount of 7% of their total number. In this case, signatures must be obtained in at least three quarters of the districts and urban districts . [8] According to the calculation of the election commission, each candidate must collect from 216 to 226 signatures of deputies of all levels and heads of municipalities, from 30 to 32 of which are deputies of district councils and councils of urban districts and heads of districts and urban districts of at least 18 districts and urban constituencies of the republic [6] .
