Story

The main characters of the book are: Aristide Sakkar (the third son of Pierre Rugon); his young wife Rene and son from his first marriage, Maxim. Arriving in Paris after the coup of Louis Napoleon, Aristide takes advantage of a massive restructuring of the center of the capital to get rich. To do this, he resorted to fraudulent schemes and speculation with real estate.

Living in the midst of luxury and licentiousness, Rene Sakkar becomes Maxim's mistress. The connection eventually bothers him and he breaks with Rene. In parallel, Aristide, on the verge of bankruptcy, forces Rene to give him the last property left from the dowry.

Having lost money and family, Renee soon dies.

Films

The French director Roger Vadim made the film “ Production ” in the same name in 1966 , using Zola’s novel as a literary basis, but shifting the duration of the action to the middle of the 20th century. The main roles in the film were played by Jane Fonda , Michel Piccoli and Peter McAnery . In English-language film markets, the film came out under the name End of the Game.
