Biography

Family

Daniel Lemus was the grandson of the German poet Johan Adam Lemus (1707-1788). His niece, Emilia Lemus (1841-1932), was the first female doctor of sciences in Germany, studied physics, opened the first clinic in Berlin for children and women. Father, Christian Lemus, worked as a teacher and director at the gymnasium in Soest, independently educated his son.

Education and research

Between 1799 and 1802, Lemus studied at the universities of Erlangen and Jena . In 1803 he came to Berlin, where he lectured in mathematics, in 1811 received a PhD . From 1813 to 1815 he worked as a teacher of mathematics at the university, from 1814 - at a mining school in Berlin. In 1826 he worked as a teacher in the military engineering school, was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle . Until 1837 he continued to lecture at the university.

Lemus's most famous work is Lehrbuch der Geometrie , which has been published several times. Lemus has published in several mathematical journals, in particular, he has written articles for Crelle's Journal . In the French magazine Nouvelles, Annales de Mathématiques published a beautiful trigonometric solution to the Malfatti problem , but due to an editor’s mistake, his last name was written as Lechmütz .

In 1840, he wrote a letter to Charles Sturm , in which he asked for a simple geometric proof of the theorem, which is now named after him. Sturm told this to Jacob Steiner , who was one of the first to provide evidence. In 1850, Lemus independently proved it in another way. Various proofs of this theorem have been published many times over the next 160 years.
