Michael of Ephesus ( dr. Greek Μιχαήλ Ἐφέσιος ; circa 1050-1129) is a Byzantine philosopher, author of several comments on the works of Aristotle . Michael's date of birth is not exactly known. A set of comments was apparently made before 1138 [1] . Thanks to the work of Michael, we have the first full comment on the Sophistic refutations , with which, perhaps, a full-fledged study of this text began.

Life
Not much is known about the life of Michael of Ephesus. He worked at the philosophical department of the University of Constantinople . Together with Eustathius Nicaea, he was part of a group organized by the daughter of Emperor Alexei I Komnin , Anna Komnina . Anna patronized the peripatetic philosophy , the revival of which began after the church anathematized the platonic teachings of John Ital . Michael of Ephesus made a significant contribution to the development of Aristotelism in his era. As the scientist writes at the end of his commentary on the “Small Works on Nature” ( Parva naturalia ), the purpose of his work was to cover the volume of texts of the Aristotelian corps, which were ignored by other commentators [2] . Mikhail was so stubbornly devoted to his work that he finally lost his sight [3] . Many comments contain hints of the current situation, as well as criticism of the education system in Constantinople.
