Shobhana Samart ( born Shobhana Samarth , Hindi समर्थ ; 1915 or November 17, 1916 - February 9, 2000 ) - Indian actress , film director and film producer of Marathi ethnicity, who began her career in the early years of sound films in the Hindi film industry and continued to play leading roles in the 1950s. One of the most highly paid actresses of her time, also organized the film company Shobhana Pictures and released four films in which her daughters Nutan and Tanuja made their debut.

Biography
Shobhana was born on November 17, 1916 in Bombay in the family of P.H. Shilotri, who was one of the first bankers in India and founded Shilotri Bank. In 1928, due to the fall in gold prices and several unsuccessful investments, her family lost its prosperity, and in 1931 they moved to Bangalore . In December of the same year, Shobhana’s father died of a heart attack, and she and her mother returned to Bombay, where she began to live with her uncle [2] .
She changed her name from Saroj to Shobhana and began to act in films after being engaged to Kumarsen Samart who at that moment was only planning to do filmmaking. Her first film, Nigahe Nafrat or Vilasi Ishwar , shot by Kolhapur Cinetone in two versions in Marathi and Hindi , was released in 1935. After which the actress took a break due to marriage and the birth of her first child [2] [3] .
Later, in 1936-1941, she played in the films of the Sagar Movietone studio , often paired with Motilal . Most of all, the actress is known for playing the role of Sita , which she first played in the film Vijay Bhatta Bharat Milap (1941), and after - in Ram Rajya (1943), one of the most successful mythological films of Indian cinema . She then repeated the role in the films Rambaan (1948) and Ram Vivah (1950) with Prem Adib in the role of Rama . Their duet eventually formed the modern iconography of the Ramayana in comics, on calendars, as well as on posters of Vishwa Hindu Parishad . In 1950 she tried herself as a director and producer, releasing the film Hamari Beti , in which her eldest daughter made her debut [4] .
Shobhana and Kumarsen, married in 1935, had four children, including famous actresses Nutan (1936-1991) and Tanuja (genus. 1943). Their other daughter, Chatura, is an artist, and their son Jaydip is a producer. Chatura and Jaidip never starred in movies. After fourteen years of marriage, Kumarsen and Shobhana parted peacefully, but were never officially divorced. After their separation, Shobhan lived with the movie actor Motilal. Among her grandchildren, the actors are the son of Nutan, Mokhnish Bahl , and the daughters of Tanuji - Kajol and Tanisha Mukherjee [3] .
She and her eldest daughter Nutan did not communicate for more than twenty years, but made up in 1983 eight years before Nutan died from cancer in February 1991 [3] . At the time of his own death, also from cancer in 2000, Shobny had seven granddaughters, one grandson, three great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons [5] .
