Galina Davydovna Vasilyeva (nee Bespokoeva ; July 7, 1933 , Leningrad - October 31, 2012 ) - Soviet highway cyclist and coach in cycling. At the competition represented the sports society " Spartak ", champion of the USSR, winner of the All-Union Championships, master of sports. Biography
Born July 7, 1933 in Leningrad . She began her career as a cyclist at the age of fifteen in 1948 at the Leningrad children's sports school of the City Department of National Education. Later in 1952 she joined the Leningrad Council of the Spartak Voluntary Sports Society, where she subsequently served for eight years. She was trained under the guidance of coach N. I. Petrov.
The greatest success as an athlete has achieved in the season of 1955, when she won the championship of the Soviet Union on road cycling. A year later, at the first summer Games of the peoples of the USSR , she also won a bronze medal in the team race for 25 km, and in the 1957 and 1958 seasons she was at the All-Union cycling championships in silver and bronze medalist, respectively. She was a member of national teams of Leningrad and the USSR, fulfilled the standard of the master of sports of the USSR .
Simultaneously with his sports career, Vasilyeva carried out coaching activities at Spartak. In 1955 she graduated from the PF Lesgaft High School of Coaches at the State Institute of Physical Culture , after which she studied in the correspondence department of this institute, graduating in 1964.
In the period 1961–1963, she worked as a bicycle sport coach at the Leningrad Council of the Volunteer Sports Association “ Labor Reserves ”, then for almost three decades from 1964–1993 she held the position of senior coach at the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) physical culture and sports society “ Dynamo ” ". From 1993–1997, she worked as a senior trainer at the St. Petersburg School of Higher Sportsmanship. Since 1999, she was at the position of the Veterans Council of St. Petersburg Dynamo, was the vice-president of the Cycling Federation of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region. She took an active part in organizing the first mountain bike competitions in the Leningrad region.
Galina Vasilyeva is one of the best Soviet coaches in cycling in the 1960s - 1970s, at which time she repeatedly became one of the best coaches in the USSR and Leningrad. In the course of many years of coaching, she has produced many award-winning riders who have achieved outstanding results in the international arena. So, one of her most famous students, Honored Master of Sports Anna Konkina , twice won the world championships in road group discipline. Another pupil of hers, Honored Master of Sports Vladislav Nelyubin , is a silver medalist of the “ Peace Race ” and a participant in the summer Olympic Games in Mexico City . Such well-known cyclists as S. Morozov, A. Timofeev, L. Tikhomirov, L. Toropov also underwent training under the guidance of Vasilyeva at various times. For outstanding achievements in the field of coaching awarded the honorary title " Honored Coach of the USSR ." She was awarded the medal " For Labor Valor ".
Died October 31, 2012 after a serious illness. Buried at the Red Cemetery in St. Petersburg [1] .
Every year in Suorand a memorial race of mountainbike is held in memory of Honored Coach of the USSR Galina Davydovna Vasilyeva [2] .
